Category - LGVC Weekly | Author - webmaster | Monday 18 March 2013 - 01:49:14

My Brothers All,

Here's our Long Green Valley Council (LGVC) news summary for Monday, March 18th to Sunday, March 24th.

1. This Week at LGVC - Monday, March 18th Council Home Rental - Tuesday, March 19th Council Lunch Bunch Meeting 11:30 AM - Wednesday, March 20 Council Home Rental - Friday, March 22nd, Fish Fry at St Mark's 4:30-7:00 PM - Friday, March 22nd, Pre-Stations Dinner at Council Home 6 PM - Friday, March 22nd, Stations of the Cross in the Chapel 7 PM - Saturday /Sunday, March 23rd & 24th Palm Sunday, Start of Holy Week

2. Participation and Service Opportunities (Council Needs for Member Help) Members are invited to our Lunch Bunch on the 3rd Tuesday each month. For those who can make a day time meeting, it is a chance for fraternity. Lunch Bunch was first created for those who can't attend evening meetings, but all are welcome. We collect a $3 donation that pays for lunch food costs and we provide a summary of what is happening. However, most of the time is spent catching up with friends. St Mark's will have a Fish Fry again on Friday afternoon starting at 4:30. We collaborated with St Marks for our Fish Fry last Friday (15th) using some of their equipment and advertising our events across both parishes. We sold our unused supplies to St Mark's to make both Fish Fry events more successful. We urge you to support them if you can.

3. Our Accomplishments Fish Fry Chair Tom Rowan planned and organized our outstanding Fish Fry last Friday, March 15th. The Fish Fry is a great Lenten tradition and combines aspects of Church, Community, Council, Youth and Family Activities so there were service opportunities for over 40 Knights who pitched in to help. Volunteers chose to work as fryers, runners, food servers, ticket takers, clean up crew, drink servers and more. A heartfelt thanks goes out to all of you. The success of the Fish Fry makes it a great candidate for a yearly occurrence (or two). A special all hands email will be sent later to fully describe the Fish Fry and provide the details. We are still completing an inventory and totalling the results.

New member Bill Zoli took his 2nd degree. Congratulate Bill when you see him. Six members recently took their 3rd degree at Dundalk Council. The 3rd degree is full membership in the Council. Members interested in the 4th Degree can also join Assemblies especially created for the 4th Degree.

The Maryland March for Life on Monday, March 11th had several attendees from our Council. Thanks to Ed Gibbons for leading our efforts. We are in theprocess of building representation at these events.

Archbishop Lori celebrated 9 AM Mass at St Johns Sunday, March 17th, with a reception following. The Knights sat together to show unity in our usual section of the Church and wore name badges. Msgr Rick recognized both our Council and the complement of 8 Sir Knights in full regalia who supported the mass. As most Knights know, Archbishop Lori is new to the Baltimore Archdiocese, but has been the Supreme Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus and a strong supporter of the Order.

4. Coming Attractions Ushers are needed for the Easter 12:30 service (March 31st). Let Brother Bob Torr (410-592-2266) know if you can help at that service.

Holy Week starts with Palm Sunday on April 24th and continues with services on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, leading to Easter on the 31st. The Council minimizes activities accordingly during Holy Week so that families are not deterred from worship services.

We cancelled the 1st Degree on Tuesday the 26th, but we will hold our social meeting that night.

Mike Sallese, Nominating Committee Chair, is looking for a few Good Men for the LGVC officer slate for July 2013-June 2014. Let Mike know that you'll be glad to serve. We are considering holding some open meetings, inviting wives and non-members. These meetings may precede, follow or replace a regular meeting and cover topics such as: insurance presentations by Fraternal Benefits advisor Mark  Bateman, ultrasound contribution recognition for Teens in Ministry (TIM).

Council Information Sessions in our wifi hot spot in the Council Home started in January. They will continue on a monthly or bi-monthly basis as interest dictates. The next attraction will be a review of the Council Web Site by webmaster Bob Elliott. This will be a chance to learn about www.kofc8736.org features and capabilities and to offer feedback to Bob. Take a look at the web site and send comments to the webmaster. We will offer the session this spring.

We will celebrate Divine Mercy on Sunday, April 7th. Long Green Valley will sell beer, as is our custom, at the Spring Fling on May 9-11. Bob Renshaw will lead our Marygold Program to distribute potted marigolds to Mothers who chose life. We will pick up the flowers from the State, re-pot them and hand them out at masses on Mother's Day weekend of May 11-12.

Our Membership Recruiting Drive will be the Ministry minute on the weekend of May 11-12 when we will speak from the pulpit. Our good works will be in evidence at the Spring Fling and Marygold program that same weekend. We need to have a big recruiting day to make our membership goal.

Our annual Ironbirds game will be Saturday, July 6th and includes a buffet, ball game and fireworks, all for $35 per ticket (under 5 free). We committed for 42 tickets.

Hall Rentals: Have folks coming to visit for the Holidays, but not enough room? Consider renting our Council Home for a family get together.

Contact Grand Knight Joe Wenderoth  410-592-9718 orjoewenderothsr@gmail.com to talk it over or reserve a date.

SUPER SAFETY

Ravens player says Catholic faith plays ‘huge role’ in life, career

superfootballfamily_250.jpg

By Penny Wiegert, Catholic News Service

Sean Considine, a safety for the Baltimore Ravens, is the first to point out that he belongs to some important families – God's family, the family of his parents, his hometown community, the family he shares with his wife and four children, and the NFL.

“My Catholic faith has played a huge role in my family and career. I thank God every day for a beautiful wife and kids, for the game of football that helps make that possible and that I am part of a game that brings enjoyment to others," Considine said in a phone interview from Baltimore, where he was preparing for the Feb. 3 Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans.

He spoke to The Observer, newspaper of the Rockford Diocese. He and his family live in Byron, Ill., where he has been a member of St. Mary Parish since he was in the fourth grade.
Considine, age 31, is quick to talk about his faith and how important it is to his career, to the kind of man he aspires to be off the field and how it guides him as a husband and father.

“I’ve always had great examples. I idolize and respect my father. I was taught to think of others before yourself,” he said. He tries to bring that philosophy to his game of football and his life off the field.“My faith has always been important and I am so blessed to have a woman that wanted to share that with me,” Considine said. His wife, Nicole, was baptized a Catholic but raised in the Baptist Church.

“When I met Sean, his faith was one of the things that I found so interesting about him,” Nicole said in an email interview. “When we began to talk about marriage, it was very important to me that we could practice our faith together and raise our children with the same beliefs and traditions.

”Considine attended RCIA classes with Nicole.“It was neat to have him by my side throughout the process,” she said. “It showed me that this was just as important to him as it was to me. It was something very special to share together as we were about to enter marriage.

”The Considines built a house in Byron “so we have somewhere to call home no matter where we are during the season,” Nicole said. The couple has a 5-year-old son and 19-month-old triplets, two boys and a girl.

Sean Considine gives much credit to the community of Byron, where he was a star player on the Byron Tigers football team in high school helping lead the team to the state championship his senior year in 1999.He took his football talent to the University of Iowa in Iowa City, where he stood out on the field and earned a degree in marketing.

In 2005, he was a fourth-round draft pick for the Philadelphia Eagles. After three years there, he played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals and then landed with the Ravens in 2012. “You can’t believe what a good family the NFL is. There are negative headlines that cloud (people’s) attitudes, but most of these guys are stand-up guys from lives of faith,” he told The Observer. “You want to see commitment and faith, you’ll find it in an NFL locker room. ”The NFL provides a Mass, just not every Sunday. “I have had a lot of opportunity to not only maintain my relationship with God, but as a Catholic,” he said.  And of course there are always game-day prayers. However, Considine said he doesn’t pray for winning or losing in the traditional pre-game prayers. “I start off giving thanks for my wife and for energy and health to represent my team with the blessings I have been given,” he said.

He said the team recites the Our Father before every kick-off and even “the unchurched pray.”Considine said being in the NFL brings some pressure but it’s not so much about the game.  “There is some pressure to be a role model,” he said.   “I guess players are on a platform, whether that’s right or wrong, there is a responsibility. To have success in faith and life and your career you have to look at the core fundamentals of faith and humility and try to be better than you were the day before and share that with others.”

When Dad Loves Mom

Category - Fathers Articles | Author - webmaster | Monday 04 March 2013 - 04:55:52

WHEN DAD LOVES MOM,
CHILDREN BENEFIT
by Ken Canfield

“Who has helped you the most in your fathering?”We asked that very question to thousands of men as part of our research. Some answered, “My father” or “My pastor.” But the most popular answer by far was, “My wife.” And when we asked, “Who helps you overcome struggles in your fathering?” the number one answer was, again, “My wife.”You may be comforted to know you’re not alone as a parent, but you should also be challenged, because your power as a father is greatly affected by your relationship with your children’s mother. Are you striving together with her as you progress toward a common goal, or are you struggling against her, and spinning in circles? She’s your number one asset and ally as a father, and showing her love and respect is one of the best things any father can do for his kids.

1. Two Indispensable Perspectives
Even if you were some kind of Superman, you could still only supply your children with a masculine perspective of the world, valuable as it is. It takes a woman – ideally their mother – to provide the deep feminine input that rounds out their world and opens up more of the wonders of adulthood.By virtue of carrying, bearing, and caring for your children in her own unique way, your children’s mother sees things in them and about them that you may miss completely. Her perspective can be quite illuminating when you compare notes, especially when it comes to understanding growing daughters. And her natural sensitivity to her children’s needs makes her an expert on how to meet those needs. Don’t be jealous; be humble. Ask her advice, and really listen; or sit down with her and say, “Honey, how am I doing?”

2. A Model for Chivalry
“Date your mate” is more than just a clever phrase. It’s a philosophy. It’s a mindset in which you reinstate some of the conditions of your dating relationship. You probably don’t have to ask her father for permission or worry about an eleven o’clock curfew any more. But your purpose is worth revitalizing: to continually re-win your true love’s affections. You revive dinners and movies, take walks in the park, visit the old hang-outs and even start showing affection in public again.During your wedding ceremony, you verbalized your commitment all at once. Marriage is an opportunity to demonstrate those vows every day.Living out your wedding vows also helps your children. You can talk your kids through their first dates and let them know what to expect, but you can show them a lot too. Your son is taking subconscious notes. He’s asking, “How should I treat women?” “What does it mean to be a husband?” Your daughter also has her eye on you. The thought of giving herself to a man in marriage can be frightening. She is asking herself how well her mother fared in the deal. Your children watch when you open car doors for your wife. They listen closely when you compliment her on how radiant she looks in that new dress, or express your appreciation for all she does for you.Dad, be passionate about the one who provided you the opportunity to be a father in the first place.

3. A Sense of Security
A fourth-grade girl wrote about her father, “He treats my mom very nicely, which makes me feel wanted.” Daily expressions of affection for your wife will do wonders for your marriage, but your children also pick up on it. If the atmosphere of the marriage is distrust or anger, then that mood will permeate the entire family. If the atmosphere of the marriage is non-communication, the children get used to silence and foreboding. On the other hand, if the atmosphere of the marriage is love, the whole family will absorb that love.Words and deeds that demonstrate your love for your wife provide your children with convincing proof that the foundation of their lives – your marriage commitment – is not going to shake, buckle and split apart. When Dad loves Mom, all is well in the universe. One of the greatest legacies you can leave your children (and yet-unborn grandchildren) is the firm belief that marriage is not to be taken lightly. It’s worth your commitment, and worth sticking it out through the tough times. Show them that your marriage is worth every ounce of effort you put into it and that, some day, theirs will be too.
